   Kids In The Hood

My name is Gabriel and my family and I just moved to LakewoodHeights after Hurricane Katrina. We have been here since March 2006. Both my Step-dad and my Mom have family on the north shore so we see them much more often than we used to. My Aunt Janice gave us tickets to the Insta-Gator Ranch & Hatchery which she considers a hidden treasure on the north shore.

Insta-Gator is an alligator ranch just about 10 minutes north of Covington. The instructor gave a presentation about alligators and how they capture the eggs from real nests and what happens to the alligators. The instructor also talked about how they feed the alligators and what to expect when they let the alligators eggs hatch in your hand.

During my trip, there were not that many people there, which was nice. We got to feed the gators and watch a live mouse get swallowed alive, that was awesome. I then got to hatch a gator in my hand, which was pretty cool. See the photo to the left. It is me holding my newly hatched alligator. They say the ooze that’s in their shell is a wrinkle reducer. I suggest that you visit  Insta-Gator and hatch a gator for yourself.

If you are a 'Kid in the Hood' in LakewoodHeights and want to write a short story about your experiences on the north shore, email your story and (optional) images to the
Web Team.

       Protect Yourself!

Unfortunately on early Wednesday morning October 20, 2010, our subdivision experienced thefts from autos and open garages. The LHIA Board wants to remind all residents that while we feel like we live in an extremely safe area, we should still keep our vehicles, garages and  homes locked at night and while we are away. Please report any suspicious activity to the police which are  not very far away.

        Lakewood Heights
Factoids:

These factoids have been submitted by residents of our subdivision:

- Lakewood Heights was established around 1977.
- The land of Lakewood Heights was a huge plant nursery owned by the Dennis Family. Many of our lots still have the rows of plants on them.
- The home at the south-west corner of Laura N and Lorraine was the camellia plot. The large camellias in the front yard are 25+ years old.
- There used to be a barn under the old oak trees in the backyard of 101 Louise Drive.
- There was a logging train track that ran behind the homes on Laura N between Lorraine and Leah on the south side.

If you have a Lakewood Heights factoid, email it to the
Web Team and include your name.

     Landscaping Team
     Making a Difference

With the new front entrance in the planning stage, the Landscaping Team will need help and support from our residents. Currently our Landscaping Team has two trained Master Gardeners on board and has a lot of knowledge about landscaping, plant types and soil conditions.

If you would like to participate, email the
Landscaping Team. They usually organize a group to work the entrance gardens about 4 times per year. Pictured in the image below are (L to R) Dianne Ramirez, Jeanne Emory (standing) and Sally Reyes. To view a larger version, click on the image. Image by Bill Emory.

         Have A Neighbor
          Not Online?

Lakewood Heights Improvement Association (LHIA) feels that having an online presence and using this web site as a communication tool is significant for our subdivision. LHIA also understands that not everyone is online and will not abandon other forms of communication. So for those that are not online, fear not, LHIA will still make phone calls, knock on doors, and pass out flyers to notify all residents of important events and information. Internet communication is growing in importance and LHIA hopes that most, if not all, of our residents use this web site to send and receive information about our community.
